I was working in Calcutta, India for a short time. I found there are many local Cantonese, who are said to be residents in Calcutta for many generations since 19th century. Few speak Chinese but some can speak Cantonese, while all speak perfect Bengali. They are tanners and manicures. As in other Indian, tanners are usually Dalit. I wonder if these Cantonese have their own caste position in India? Are they Dalit as well? They are don't outsider, they are part of the kolkata community, been there for 2 hundred years I think they have. It's possible these cantonese are harijan. any other suggestion? anyone from Kolkata?... Read More »
